imageThe Beautiful Letdown of Christmas

Most people reading this blog (all 3 of you) are probably either too old or too young to have heard of the band Switchfoot. They were a really popular Christian band in the early noughties. Here's a verse from their song 'A Beautiful Letdown'.

It was a beautiful let down

When I crashed and burned

When I found myself alone unknown and hurt

It was a beautiful let down

The day I knew

That all the riches this world had to offer me

Would never do

I love that phrase 'a beautiful letdown'. It is what a lot of people will feel this Christmas.

Christmas is often sold to us as the perfect time of year. It is when dreams come true and the world is all OK for a day. We get what we want and everything is magical.

Of course, as good as Christmas is, and don't get me wrong I'm no Scrooge, but as good as it is, it will never match those expectations. Even if everything happens just the way you planned and you get all that you want, you will probably be left a little unfulfilled.

Very often when we build these things up there is a kind of disappointment when they finally arrive. You feel a bit hollow when you realise that, even though you got what you wanted, it didn't make you as happy as you thought it would. It didn't perfect your life the way you thought it would. Because, as good as this Christmas is, and as great as the food, presents and fun are, next year you will have to do the same again.

Maybe it will come on Boxing Day, maybe it will be the day after but a lot of us are left a little disappointed.

That is a wonderful feeling. It is when we are being pointed to the realisation "That all the riches this world had to offer me / Would never do". It whispers to us that we were made for more. It shows us that, as good as the things of the world are, they don't fulfil us. It is a divine disappointment. It is the beautiful letdown.

So don't be afraid to be letdown this Christmas. But see the beauty. It points you to Jesus.

"Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst"
